All individuals at St. Michael’s High School have the right to learn, work and play in a positive and secure environment. Everyone, including staff and students is expected to contribute to this atmosphere of mutual respect and co-operation. In order to ensure that we all have access to this climate, the following unacceptable behaviours will be dealt with immediately by staff members. These also apply to the bus and to any activities related to school whether or not the behaviour occurs on school grounds.
Hands-Off Policy at St. Michael’s
Any unwanted physical contact is not permitted at the school, including play-fighting.
Harassment
As per the W.Q.S.B. Safe Schools Policy, harassment of any kind (physical, sexual, psychological) is not permitted at the school.
Non-compliance with Staff Requests
Teachers and other staff are responsible for maintaining discipline and safety standards throughout the school. If a staff member makes a request of a student, the student must comply immediately.
Inappropriate Language and Gestures
Offensive, abusive language or inappropriate gestures are not permitted.
Disruption of Learning
Disruption of classes, activities, assemblies etc., will not be tolerated.
Destruction of Property
Everyone is to respect school property and the property of others. Willful destruction, defacing or vandalism of property is not permitted at St. Michael’s.
Smoke-Free Zone
Smoking is not permitted for staff, students or visitors on the premises.
Drugs and Alcohol
As per the WQSB Drug and Alcohol Policy, no individuals are permitted to be intoxicated on school premises. Having these substances in one’s possession is also not allowed on school premises. Drug trafficking results in an indefinite suspension and cases are referred to the Discipline Committee of the WQSB.
Boundaries
Students in Cycle One must remain within view and on school property unless permission is granted by the principal. Students in Cycle Two are only permitted off school grounds or out of view at lunch.
Dress Code
All individuals must show good taste and common sense when in school. We all represent our school and must take pride in how we present ourselves. This helps to establish a positive school and classroom atmosphere. Students wearing immodest articles of clothing or clothes with inappropriate comments or pictures will not be permitted at school. Outdoor clothes (scarves, coats, sunglasses, etc.) are to be worn outdoors only.
Principal’s Discretion
Other behaviour may be of a more specific nature and such examples will be dealt with by the school principal.
Consequences
Consequences will be applied in order to correct the behaviour of individuals engaging in this conduct. We believe the main goal of discipline is not to punish. It is to teach. Although these are school-wide rules, the classroom teacher may have additional policies in class. Appropriate consequences will be applied depending on the nature, severity and frequency of the behaviour.
